German Language

German is a highly inflected language, featuring four cases for nouns, pronouns, and adjectives (nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative), as well as three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and strong and weak verbs. With over 90 million native speakers, German ranks among the languages with the highest number of mother tongue speakers worldwide. It is widely studied as a foreign language and holds significant cultural importance in the Western world. In its written form, German exhibits a high degree of uniformity, with no discernible differences between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, much like written English in the United States and the British Commonwealth. However, when spoken, German encompasses various dialects, predominantly falling into the High German or Low German dialect groups. The primary distinction between High German and Low German lies in the sound system, particularly in terms of consonants. High German, the language spoken in the southern German highlands, serves as the official written language.
